RB R.J. Shelton discusses commitment to MSU
Head Coach Mark Dantonio and the Spartan staff received some great news Sunday morning when standout running back R.J. Shelton of Beaver Dam High School in Wisconsin committed to Michigan State University. SpartanMag.com has some details.
Shelton, who the Spartans offered a few weeks ago, selected Michigan State over scholarship offers from Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota. As a junior, Shelton rolled up an impressive 2048-yards on 217 carries and scored 34 touchdowns.
Shelton talked about what made Michigan State the place for him:
“I liked everything about Michigan State and wanted to be part of the program. The coaches and the place itself just fit me the best.”
Michigan State has only signed one running back in the last two years and they will lose one or possibly two running backs after the 2012 season. A player of Shelton’s ability could come in and make an early impact.
Shelton talked about meeting with the staff this morning and their reaction to his decision to become a member of the Green and White.
“I was able to sit down and meet with Coach Dantonio this morning and we talked quite a bit. The coaches were excited when I told them. They said they cannot wait to coach me and am looking forward to helping me become a great player and young man.”
Shelton has strong family ties to the University of Wisconsin. His mother played basketball for the Badgers and his father played football. His all-around athletic ability should allow him to excel in both the run game as well as catching passes out of the backfield. We asked him about what he believes is his biggest strength as a player and his parents’ thoughts on his college decision.
“My strengths are my speed and my ability to make people miss,” Shelton said. “My family is behind me 100% and always has been. They are excited and have been very supportive.”
The commitment of Shelton addresses a big need for the class of 2013. The Spartans needed a game-breaking running back for this class and in Shelton they got a commitment from someone who can do just that.
