October 24, 2009 It wasn't pretty and it wasn't the shootout many expected, but behind an opportunistic defense, Central Michigan improved to 7-1(5-0) with a 24-10 victory at Bowling Green.Going into the game, CMU was matched up against the talented duo of quarterback Tyler Sheehan and wide receiver Freddie Barnes. Well?after four quarters of play, those two lived up to their reputations and continued their hot statistical start. Sheehan would complete 35-55 passes for 341 yards with one touchdown and one interception, while Barnes would snag 14 receptions for 172 yards and a touchdown. The Chippewas would give up 363 total yards to the Falcons, but tightened down in the redzone and forced two turnovers (Josh Gordy interception and Nick Bellore forced fumble). In a bend but don't break strategy that has followed CMU on games away from Kelly/Shorts Stadium, the Chippewas defense stifled the Falcons run game and were able to make big plays when they mattered the most. Offensively, Carl Volny would get the surprise start at running back and contribute with 74 yards on just 11 carries. Quarterback Dan LeFevour would add 141 yards on 23 carries and also throw for 147 yards and two touchdowns, giving him a total of 288 yards. Antonio Brown would be CMU's leading receiver as he caught 5 passes for 68 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown reception. Wind was a major factor at the stadium and CMU came out looking to establish the run against the MAC's worse statistical rush defense. They did so to the tune of 259 total rushing yards and were able to take time off the clock late in the game by emphasizing the run. Penalties were a bit of an issue, as CMU had 9 penalties for 77 yards, but in the end, it's another victory on the road in the MAC. The Chippewas remain undefeated in MAC play and have a stranglehold on the MAC West division. Central Michigan next takes on Boston College on October 31st at 3:30pm. The game is scheduled to be on ESPNU. |
