LCPB Postgame: Lance Guidry
Lance Guidry addressed the media after the Hilltoppers lost to Central Michigan, 24-21, in the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl.Western Kentucky defensive coordinator and interim head coach
I'm so proud of these guys. We've gone through a lot of turmoil, with Coach Taggert leaving and the quick hire of Coach Petrino and having to be the interim coach. We've been practicing for a few weeks getting ready for this game. We only had a couple bad practices, but for the most part, we had a lot of good practices. I was proud of the way we played today. I thought the first half was little sluggish. They were able to run the ball on us and they hit a couple big plays. Offensively, we did not move the ball enough and we really did not have the ball enough. We picked it up in the second half, especially on defense. Offensively, we had the ball almost the entire third quarter. We left some plays out there on the field: a couple interceptions and a couple of big plays in the passing game. Sometimes, that's just the way the cookie crumbles.
On the decision to go for it on fourth down with less than a minute left
Let me tell you, all players. We were going to kick the field goal. We had the unit in the huddle and "Big Country" said "Coach, we said we were to let it all loose." He was right and I asked everybody if they wanted to go for it, including the defense, and they all wanted to go for it. They made the decision for me. I would do it every time and twice on Sunday. I put it in their hands and that's how they wanted it and that's how I'm going out.
On letting the play clock run down after the third down on that last drive
We wanted more time to go off the clock to kick the field, but when we got in the huddle, that's when they changed my mind. It is what it is. We took a good shot at the first down and it just didn't happen.
On the school's first FBS bowl appearance
I thought they put on a really good show. It must have been an exciting game to watch back home. It wasn't always exciting for us on the sideline. I thought they came out, they competed. We played without (All-Sun Belt first team linebacker) Andrew Jackson for most of the game. He had a bad ankle. But Darius Washington stepped up and I thought we competed hard. Central Michigan is well coached football team. They have a massive offensive line and their running back does some really good things. I thought they had a really good defensive gameplan. We just happened to take some shots on first down with the passing game and we didn't always catch it. In the second half, we started getting our run game together. These guys are going to get in a lot of bowls in the future and this is a good experience for them
On Andrew Flory filling in for Titus Davis
To tell you the truth, I didn't know who he was. We knew that (Titus Davis) was out, but they did a good job. The quarterback threw some good balls too. I think you have to treat every receiver the same, unless they have one who's really special. He had a good night, which was really good for them and it took away from us being able to play run defense after they hit a couple big plays on us. Credit to them, Coach Enos is a really good coach and Coach Watts is a really good schemer. They did a really good job in the first half. In the second half, we were able to tighten it up and make some plays.
On his future plans
I'm going to get back to my family. I haven't seen them in a while. I just want to get back home and spend time with my wife and kids. Then I'll head to the coaches convention and start looking for a job. You know, I love these guys and I'll stay in touch with all of them. Anything I can do for them in the future, I'm always there for them and they know that. But anytime I switch jobs, it's difficult, whether I leave by choice or not.
