Tipton named MAC West Offensive Player of the Week

Junior running back Zurlon Tipton has been recognized with MAC West Offensive Player of the Week honors for his outstanding play in Central Michigan's 42-21 road win over UMass in Friday's regular season finale. The conference award is Tipton's second of the 2012 season.

Tipton, who was honored with the Herb Deromedi Most Valuable Player Award at the CMU team banquet on Sunday, powered the Chippewas past UMass, rushing for 185 yards on 25 carries, a 7.4 average, and a career-high four touchdowns. Tipton got stronger as the game went on, running for touchdowns of one, three, and nine yards before exploding for a 61-yarder in the fourth quarter. His 185-yard output was his second highest of the season and marked the sixth consecutive game in which he broke the 100-yard barrier. Tipton was also CMU's second leading receiver versus the Minutemen, catching two passes for 31 yards.

Tipton has rushed for 1,391 yards in 2012, which ranks seventh in the CMU single season charts and is the most by a Chippewa running back in 16 years. His 19 rushing touchdowns this season are tied for the second in the CMU record book and rank him fifth nationally among running backs. Tipton is No. 2 in the MAC in points per game, averaging 10.0, and his rushing total is the fourth highest in the conference.

Tipton also earned MAC West Player of the Week recognition on October 29 following his record-setting 243-yard rushing day in CMU's 35-14 victory over Akron.

Tipton is one of five Chippewas to be recognized by the MAC with player of the week honors in 2012. Senior quarterback Ryan Radcliff (Sept. 24) was named MAC West Offensive Player of the Week, senior safety Jahleel Addae earned defensive honors, while senior kicker David Harman (Sept. 24) and junior punter Richie Hogan (Nov. 5) were selected in the special teams category.

Central Michigan (6-6, 4-4 MAC) finished the 2012 regular season by winning four of its last five games, including three straight, to become bowl eligible for the fifthtime in seven years.
