Through four games the 2021 season for the Central Michigan Chippewas has been full of ups and downs.

They gave up a touchdown within the first minute of the season, only to come back and respond with a score just a few minutes later. Against LSU in week 2, the Chippewas hoped to be more competitive, but struggled mightily. And last week, in a game they should have won with a bit less stress, the Chippewas had to make a 21-point comeback to beat FIU on their own turf.

And now the team is facing what most do at this point of the season, injuries and decisions.

Second-year quarterback Daniel Richardson took over for CMU last week, leading the team in its comeback effort. Because of that, he's been announced as the starter for this Saturday as conference play begins against Mid-American foe Miami (OH). The Redhawks are a 1-point home favorite over the Chippewas in what is expected to be a close game.

On the offensive line the Chippewas are facing the reality they may be without steady left guard Danny Motowski for the season. Head coach Jim McElwain said earlier this week the big man is dealing with a back issue and is not likely to return. Sophomore Tyden Ferris will see the majority of playing time in his absence.

Running back Darius Bracy continues to nurse a knee injury suffered in week three and his presence continues to be missed. Freshman Marion Lukes has done a nice job stepping in, but it is hard to replace experience. The other freshman running back, DJ Stepney, looked great in his first game in week 2, but he is likely seeing his playing time monitored to keep the option of a redshirt season open.

On defense the Chippewas were already dealing with multiple injuries on the defensive line and this past week number one cornerback Dishon McNary was injured on a play in which he was celebrating after a pass breakup. Freshman Daedae Hill is expected to start in his place this week, giving CMU two freshmen starting at cornerback along with Donte Kent.

For many around the country, this week is viewed as the week the season gets serious. Conference opponents every week from here on out and a chance to win titles. For McElwain and the Chippewas, a trip to Ford Field in Detroit to play for the MAC Championship is the only acceptable outcome. In fact, the last time the Chippewas squared off against Miami (OH) was in the MAC title game in Detroit in 2019. They come into this matchup with a 1-3 record after a tough non-conference slate losing to Cincinnati, Minnesota and Army.

Both teams have the exact same turnover margin on the season, and that will play a huge role Saturday in deciding who will come out on top. Starting the MAC schedule off with a win is crucial for both teams and this one is expected to be a classic. Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM from Yager Stadium in Oxford, Ohio.
