CMU embarassed by Detroit at home

MOUNT PLEASANT - Ray McCallum scored 21 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and tallied seven assists as Detroit defeated Central Michigan, 75-49, at McGuirk Arena on Saturday night.

The Chippewas (2-8) were held to a season-low 27 percent from the field (17-63) by the Titans (7-5).

"I'd like to say congratulations to Detroit, Ray McCallum and his program," head coach Ernie Zeigler said. "They came in here and totally dismantled us. It's extremely frustrating."

The two teams played even the first 11 minutes of the contest, as freshmen guards Trey Zeigler and McCallum each scored six of their team's 11 points.

Tied 13-13 with 7:41 to go in the first half, McCallum made a driving layup to kick off an 18-5 run that gave the Titans a 31-20 lead at the break. McCallum finished the first half with 10 points and five rebounds, while the Chippewas were just 6-of-26 from the field, including 0-for-8 from behind the arc.

The Titans continued to control the game with a 17-5 run to start the second half, extending their lead to 48-25. During the run, Jason Calliste hit two of his game-high four three-point field goals.

The Chippewas continued to battle throughout the second half, as Andre Coimbra scored six straight points to cut the deficit to 23, 62-39, but that's as close as the Chippewas would get as Detroit's stifling defense held strong. Coimbra finished the game with 10 points and career highs of eight rebounds and five blocks.

"I thought Andre Coimbra tried to show some fight," Zeigler said. "Hopefully that's something we can build on with him."

CMU finished the game 3-for-21 from behind the three-point arc and was held to 49 points, their lowest point total of the season, for the second straight game.

Zeigler led the Chippewas with 21 points on 7-of-18 shooting.

Former Chippewa Chase Simon scored 16 points and pulled down four rebounds for the Titans, who finished the game shooting 46.2 percent, including 50 percent from downtown (5-10). Calliste also scored in double figures, contributing 16 points.

Central will be back in action on Monday when it hosts South Dakota State at 7 p.m.
