CMU offers 2017 Belleville athlete

When you are a mid-sized Mid-American Conference school being able to expand the recruiting horizon is a great thing. But it's also important to make sure you find the best that you can in your home state.

The Central Michigan football team is doing nothing short of that, and continued to stay true to home-town recruits with an offer to Belleville athlete Devonni Reed. Reed, a defensive back, received his fourth offer from CMU last month.

He sits at an even 6-foot, 180-pounds and enjoyed an incredible junior season helping his team to an 8-1 overall record. CMU is Reed's fourth offer, as he also has offers from Miami (OH), Eastern Michigan and Toledo.

He has already taken three visits to Toledo, but also visited CMU when they took on the Rockets.

"They (CMU) treated me well," said Reed. "To this day I am in contact with them."

Belleville head coach Jermain Crowell coached many Division I defensive backs at Cass Tech, and he has helped transform Reed into a Division I player. With a ton of upside, Reed's stock is only going to grow.

With a need at the defensive back position, he would have a chance to make an immediate impact with the Chippewas in 2017. Reed says his main goals for the offseason are to get bigger. Putting on 10-20 pounds for an athlete of his size could make a huge difference.

"I want to really put myself out there and get my weight to at least 205," Reed said. "I want to increase my skills and improve my work ethic so I can be one of the top athletes in the 2017 class."

In terms of top athletes in Michigan for 2017, Reed is headed in the right direction.

"I want to make sure I go to a school that will help me graduate and help me when I need it," said Reed. "Education is key. I am looking for a good environment with no crime or bad history around it."

CMU has made multiple offers to athletes in the 2017 class in hopes that they can feel the upward trend. Since stepping on campus, head coach John Bonamego has transformed this team into a winner.

The Chippewas hope a bowl win on Monday against Minnesota can continue that trend.

Here are some of Reed's highlights:
