How fitting is it that just two days before Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' induction ceremony into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, team quarterback Cooper Rush throws his first career NFL touchdown pass.
Rush, who left Central Michigan last season second all-time in passing yards, entered this year's edition of the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio, during the opening possession of the second half.
The 2017 undrafted free agent, who's positioning himself in securing the backup quarterback role for Dallas behind Dak Prescott, led a nine play, 75 yard drive that ended with a 14 yard touchdown throw to receiver EZ Nwachukwu on fourth down.
Rush faced a seven man blitz that forced him to throw the ball without settling his feet. He was able to find the Texas A&M graduate on a slant route for the 16-15 score over the Arizona Cardinals.
"This Rush is looking pretty good," Jones said on guest commentary with NBC's broadcast team of Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth.
The Charlotte, Michigan, native finished 9-of-18 passing for 87 yards and no interceptions, compared that to Kellen Moore, the other backup for Dallas, who was 12-of-17 for 182 yards with a touchdown and interception.
The Cowboys have four remaining preseason games before their home opener against the New York Giants on September 10. Rush's playing time will drop exponentially as Prescott gets more reps under center, but Thursday was a strong showing from the third-stringer.
